Dental anxiety and phobias often keep patients of all ages from visiting the dentist regularly. Drs. Todd S. Adams and Derek H. Tang are committed to ensuring patients have access to dental treatments they need to feel their best before, during, and after their procedures. Sunnyvale, CA area dentists, Drs. Todd S. Adams and Derek H. Tang are pleased to provide a solution with sedation dentistry options.
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a way of relaxing a patient who might have a fear of the dentist. Dental anxiety and phobia are one of the most common reasons why a patient does not visit the dentist on a regular basis. Patients might be afraid of pain and discomfort, or they may be bothered by others in their personal space. Whatever the reason, sedation dentistry can help.
What types of sedation are available with Drs. Todd S. Adams and Derek H. Tang?
Our team is pleased to provide the two following types of sedation in our facility:
- Nitrous oxide sedation – for many patients with mild anxieties, nitrous oxide sedation is often sufficient. This affordable method of sedation is administered right in the dental chair and can be reversed with oxygen. Patients who use nitrous oxide sedation, or “laughing gas,” are often very relaxed throughout their treatment. Patients can transport themselves to and from their appointment with this method of sedation.
- Oral conscious sedation – another option for those with more concerning dental anxieties is oral conscious sedation. This method of sedation uses a prescription pill that is administered orally about one hour prior to the dental appointment. Patients need to arrange transportation to their appointment while under the influence of this medication. Many patients are awake and coherent throughout the appointment, but after they return home and rest, they have little memory of their visit to the dental chair.
